Sony Announces New Android Based Smart-Watch

Electronics giant Sony launched its new SmartWatch on Thursday (April 12), a new wrist-watch that gives users the ability to communicate with their Android phones without having to forage through their pockets to get it.

According to a press release, the SmartWatch allows its owner to read text messages, social media updates and e-mails, manage calls, and control music from their wrists when its connected to an Android phone via Bluetooth. It alerts users to an event or an incoming call with a vibrating feature.

The device also boasts a 1.3-inch OLED touch display, and works with existing apps from the Android marketplace, but developers can create apps specifically for the device as well.

“SmartWatch is the first of many Smart Extras that seamlessly connect and expand the smartphone’s reach and user experience,” said Paul Hamnett, President and Head of Customer Unit, North America, Sony Mobile Communications. “Designed to break free from the single screen experience, SmartWatch provides access to live content and entertainment on the go.”

It’s strap is made of rubber and comes in several colors, including white, pink, mint, and blue.

Sony’s SmartWatch retails for $149.99, and is currently available online at Sony.com/SmartWatch or Sony retail locations. It will hit additional retailers soon.
