Police Investigate Shooting Death Of Former NFL Player Junior Seau

Former NFL star, Junior Seau, was found dead in his California home Wednesday morning (May 2). Police are currently investigating.

According to TMZ, cops were called to the retired NFL star’s home in Oceanside, California sometime Wednesday morning to investigate a shooting that occurred inside the residence.

While details are currently scarce, but local police — on the scene — says they responded to calls that shots were heard coming from the inside of Seau’s home. Upon arrival, multiple law enforcement have confirmed that the 43-year-old was found dead inside.

TMZ reports that Seau sent text messages to his ex-wife and three kids on Tuesday (May 1) saying, “Love you.” We’re told they all responded and didn’t suspect anything was wrong.  He last saw his kids three weeks ago.

Cops suspect suicide.

Update: Oceanside Police Chief Frank McCoy just spoke outside Seau’s San Diego house, claiming Seau’s body was initially discovered by Seau’s girlfriend. Authorities responded, and found Seau’s unconscious body inside a bedroom, with a gunshot wound to the chest. Paramedics attempted to revive Seau, but life-saving efforts were unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead at the scene. His body is still inside the house. The rep says investigators recovered a handgun on the scene. The case is being investigated as a suicide.

Seau’s mother also spoke briefly — and she was hysterical, crying to God, “Take me. Leave my son alone!”

The San Diego Chargers released a statement shortly after the news broke: “Everyone at the Chargers is in complete shock and disbelief right now…We ask everyone to stop what they’re doing and send their prayers to Junior and his family.”

Seau was a beast on the gridiron. He began his NFL in 1990, after being drafted by the San Diego Chargers with the #5 over pick in the Draft. During his career, he became known as an explosive defensive player who would shut down some of the game’s biggest offensive threats.

While Seau never earned a Super Bowl ring, he did garner countless accolades as an NFL player. He was named to the Pro Bowl 12 times, was named an All-Pro 10 times, was a two-time AFC champion, and was named Defensive Player of the Year in 1992.

Seau was just 43-years-old. He is survived by his three children kids and an ex-wife.

The NFL great reportedly drove his SUV off a cliff in Oceanside in late 2010, hours after he was arrested for allegedly attacking his girlfriend. Helater said he was not trying to kill himself, as many speculated, insisting he had fallen asleep at the wheel.
