The BET Awards ’13 went down on Sunday (June 30) in Los Angeles, and it was Kendrick Lamar and Drake who walked away the evening’s big winners, each taking home three awards.
Drake won the “Video of the Year” award for his single, “Started From the Bottom,” as well as the “Coca-Cola Viewer’s Choice Award,” while Kendrick scored “Best Male Hip Hop Artist” and “Best New Artist.”
“If you keep love, God, respect, and hard work in your heart, you can do anything you want in life,” Kendrick said while accepting his “Best Male Hip Hop Artist” honor.
Drake, however, was not in attendence. He did show his appreciation on Twitter, though. “Thank you to BET and to the fans for voting! I’m home finishing the album and spending time w/ family before we begin our journey Sept 17.”
Other notable winners include: Rihanna with “Best Female R&B/Pop Artist”; Miguel picked up “Best Male R&B/Pop Artist”; and Nicki Minaj won “Best Female Hip Hop Artist” for the fourth year in a row.
Chris Brown opened the show with a medley of songs, and took home the “Fandemonium Award.” “Don’t read the bull in the news, I’m a real dude,” he said.
Other performers during the evening were Mariah Carey, Ciara, R. Kelly, Chris Brown, 2 Chainz, J. Cole, Justin Timberlake, and more.
